DTMU Organizes Workshop to Develop Clinical Practice Guidelines for Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders

On April 1, 2026, Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University (DTMU), hosted a workshop on “Oral Leukoplakia and Oral Lichen Planus Clinical Practice Guideline Development” at Room 301, 3rd Floor, 50th Anniversary of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building. The event aimed to collaboratively develop clinical practice guidelines for diagnosing and managing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) tailored to Thailand’s context, with extensive participation from government agencies, professional organizations, and dental associations.

Professor Dr. Waranun Buajeeb, Dean’s Advisor and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre (WHO CC) for Oral Health Education and Research at DTMU, welcomed the attendees and outlined the objectives and operational guidelines for this initiative.

The workshop featured a special lecture by Dr. Adirek Sriwatanawongsa on “Tobacco Landscapes in Thailand and Strategic Cessation for OPMDs Management.” Following this, the working committee and participants—including Emeritus Professor Saman Warnakulasuriya (Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer and Precancer), alongside representatives from the Thai Society of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, Oral Diseases Group of Thailand (ODGT), the Dental Association of Thailand, Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Thailand, and Ministry of Public Health—collaborated to discuss, review empirical evidence, and draft the clinical practice guidelines for Oral Leukoplakia and Oral Lichen Planus.

This initiative is part of the WHO CC for Oral Health Education and Research at DTMU’s mission to support the development of academic evidence, training, and oral disease prevention promotion, aligning with the WHO South-East Asia Regional Oral Health Action Plan 2022–2030.

This workshop marks a significant step forward in establishing a foundation for OPMD clinical practice guidelines in Thailand, helping standardize patient care and effectively supporting long-term oral cancer prevention.
