WHO and UNEP Delegation Visits MUDT to Discuss Strategies for Reducing Dental Amalgam Use in Thailand

On September 17, 2024, Mahidol University Faculty of Dentistry (MUDT) warmly welcomed a delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The visiting delegation included:

: Ms. Grace Halla, Programme Officer, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
: Dr. Mitsugu Saito, Programme Management Officer, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

The event was attended by officials from the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, including the Bureau of Dental Health and the Bureau of Environmental Health, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Pollution Control Department. Discussions were held at Meeting Room 301 on the third floor of the 50th Anniversary of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building.

Professor Dr. Waranun Buajeeb, Dean’s Advisor and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Health Education and Research (WHO CC), along with Associate Professor Dr. Pisol Senawongse, Deputy Dean for Research, Facilities, and Environment, and Associate Professor Dr. Tippanart Vichayanrat from the Department of Community Dentistry, presented updates on the following topics:

: Proposal Development: Amalgam Separators Implementation Research
: Wastewater Management from Dental Units in The Faculty of Dentistry
: Curriculum and Practices Related to Dental Amalgam and Its Waste Management

This collaborative project aims to reduce the use of dental amalgam due to its mercury content, which poses risks to both health and the environment. The initiative supports WHO’s global policy on dental health and environmental protection, with MUDT playing a key role as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Health Education and Research.
